The Summer and Online Study . . . Perfect Together!

04/28/2010

In the coming weeks, we’ll be serving up a stream of posts about why the summer is such a great time to take college courses – both online and in the classroom. Today, let’s take a look at some reasons why summer is such a good time to sign up, log in, and start learning.

Reason one: You can front-load the courses you’re required to take in September. Let’s say you’ve just been admitted to the college of your choice, and you’ve gotten a list of the courses you’ll be required to take. Why not take some of those college courses online ahead of time – either to clear them from your schedule in the fall or get practice before you enter the “real” college classroom?

Reason two:

You can turn vacations into learning experiences. All you need is a laptop and a hotel with WiFi, and you can take your classroom with you anywhere. It’s a great way to put summer downtime to productive use. Heck, even  some beachfront Tiki bars have WiFi access now. Saying, “Give me a sec, I’m in college right now” could be a great way to break the ice.

Reason three:

Community and other colleges offer special deals and courses over the summer. You don’t have to apply, take the SAT, and wait to be admitted. Just sign up and you’re in. Better yet, many of these courses are much shorter in duration than the same courses would be during a regular school year. And some colleges offer courses in the evenings so you can fit them in after a day at work.

Reason four:

Heck, it’s fun. Studying online is energizing, productive, and exciting. Heck, it’s fun. Why not make it part of your summer plans?
