Self-defence training for distance learning students

Delhi University has decided to extend its self-defence training for women to students from School of Open Learning.

The programme, which is being run in association with the Delhi Police, was so far being offered only to students from regular colleges.

“In order to extend the self-defence training to a larger number of students, the Gender Sensitisation Committee (GSC) is going to organise a Self-Defence Training programme for girls. This programme is being organised in close collaboration with the Delhi Police. The training shall be organised in batches for 10 days, starting in the next few days and will go on till April 2016 and shall be held at three venues,” said a senior official of DU's School of Open Learning.

The venues for the training have not been decided yet, the official said.

“Earlier the training was limited to girls studying in regular colleges, but now we have decided to extend it to SOL too. Though students do not attend classes here on a regular basis, but we though that it would be a good idea to engage them with this training since it is important for all girls to learn self-defence,” he added.

A Delhi Police officer associated with the programme said: “The Delhi Police have been providing self-defence classes to women in many private and government institutions.” There are classes for women in DU also but only for students in regular colleges. When the GSC approached us for imparting training to students from distance learning programme, we happily agreed.”

Delhi Police had set a target of training 1,00,000 women in self-defence at the beginning of this year and nearly half of the target was already achieved by June-end. The training programme will be free of cost for the students.
