LUCKNOW: After discontinuing the distance learning education in 2011, Lucknow University on Thursday got a regular study centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). The centre was inaugurated by university vice-chancellor SB Nimse. The distance learning programme at LU was first introduced in 2002.
The centre, said IGNOU coordinator at LU Naveen Khare will give a chance to the students to pursue distance learning courses in addition with regular ones. Though the academic session was supposed to begin from September 1, the centre could officially be started on October 6.
Like its regular courses, the LU"s IGNOU centre is expected to draw students from adjoining districts. To begin with, the full-fledged study centre offers 25 academic programmes which not only add value to the knowledge of the students community but will also provide new career options.
There are two bachelor programme, in social work and tourism studies; four certificate courses, in Arabic, French, Bee Keeping and Urdu; one diploma in tourism studies; 11 master's, in Anthropology, Gender & Development Studies, Psychology, Philosophy, Women & Gender Studies, Hindi, Public Administration, Sociology, Social Work, Social work & Counselling, Tourism & Travel Management, and seven PG diploma, in Analytical Chemistry, Audio Programme Production, Applied Statistics, Pharmaceutical Sales & Management, Urban Planning & Development, Women & Gender Studies, Journalism & Mass Communication.
Khare said there are more than 500 students registered in these programme in the first year of inception of this center and most sought after courses are in Hindi, sociology and social work.
