Nigeria: Govt Committed to Subsidising Distance Learning - NOUN

11/23/2015

The Vice-Chancellor National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Professor Vincent Ado Tenebe said the federal government has substantially subsidized various charges paid by students.

He said this was to encourage the development of the tertiary education and cushion the high cost of Open and Direct Learning programmes in Nigeria.

Tenebe also noted that students of NOUN had been warned not to pay any charge except those stipulated by the university authorities, which must also be paid into the authorized account of the Institution.

The warning was a response to allegations by some students that they were being overburdened by "illegal" fees in various Study Centers across the country.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that no Study Centre had the authority to charge and collect fees from students.

The Vice Chancellor advised the students to regularly visit the university's website, www.noun.edu.ng <http://www.noun.edu.ng/>, to keep abreast of current developments in the institution, including the approved fees.

Prof. Tenebe, warned Study Centre Directors that there would be severe consequences, if any of them were found to be charging students illegal administrative fees, at variance with the fees stipulated by the University.
